2012年12月28日、SCE PS2的介绍网页上告知“Playstation2 日本国内出货截止本日结束！！”。至此PS2将不会再生产，留下的只有市场上流通的PS2.

PS2于2000年3月4日发卖。长期占据人气主机地位，受到粉丝支持。全世界累计贩卖超过1亿5000万。
