And medicine, law, business, engineering—these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love — these are what we stay alive for.（我们读诗写诗，非为它的灵巧。我们读诗写诗，因为我们是人类的一员．而人类充满了热情。医药，法律，商业，工程，这些都是高贵的理想，并且是维生的必需条件。但是诗，美，浪漫，爱，这些才是我们生存的原因。）每次看到基丁老师朗诵起“O’ Captain! My Captain!”，就忍不住热泪盈眶，诗歌是他们打破陈腐、禁锢的思想的突破口。然而诗的意义不止于此。背诵古诗，让这些字字句句在潜意识中成为孩子的一部分，他会因此而更加热爱生活。失意时记起李白“我辈岂是蓬蒿人”的大气，孤单时听张九龄“天涯共此时”的宽慰，就算潦倒，也有杜工部诗中的佳肴鼓励，我们离不开诗，离不开文学，因为他同样扎根这个世界。让孩子背诗，便是将这个世界所有美好与不美好，悄悄种在他心中。于是任风起云涌，他自宠辱不惊，这是诗的力量。
